Item Digitization of Library Resources: Challenges and Implications For Policy and Planning(International Journal of African & African American Studies, 2006-07) Fabunmi, B.A.; Paris, M.; Fabunmi, M.This paper examines the concept of digitization, it’s purposes and the process of digitization of library resources. The cognitive flexibility, relational communication and non-verbal immediacy communication theories were used for illustration. It also discusses the challenges often encountered during digitization and the implications for planning and policy. Digitization implies conversion of documents and art works into digital images. Digital images here mean electronic copies of documents. Digitization is a process in which materials are converted from the hard copies to electronic copies. The major purposes of digitalization are: to enhance access and improve preservation of library materials. A number of challenges are encountered in the process of digitizing library materials. These challenges include human and technical problems, which have implications for planning and policy. It was concluded that digitization is an essential task in modern day libraries, because of the current challenges, and the need to go digital, that is, provide online services.Item Challenges and Prospects of Virtual Libraries in Universities in Nigeria(European Journal of Scientific Research, 2009) Fabunmi, B.A.The challenges and the prospects of virtual library in a university system constitute the focus of this paper. Most university libraries in Nigeria are in deplorable conditions due to inadequate funding. This manifests in libraries having few current books, journals, and other reading resources; staff shortages; deterioration of facilities; inadequate equipment and even library buildings. Such situations are not conducive environment for reading. The virtual library project has the capability of resolving this problem. In this period of information explosion, there is the need for university libraries in Nigeria to use appropriate technology to access the world information in order to enable Universities carry out their traditional functions of teaching, research and public service effectively and efficiently.Item The Roles of Librarians in Copyright Protection in Nigeria(International Journal of African & African-American Studies, 2009) Fabunmi, B.A.This paper gives an overview of copyright issues in Nigeria with an emphasis on the librarians who are the custodians of most intellectual property. The paper dwells much on the librarians’ roles in the protection of their users’ rights as well as safeguarding the interest of creators. Such protection provides the necessary incentives for scientific, technological and intellectual creativity. Librarians need to pay close attention to the balance between promoting the users’ right as well as creators’ right. It is concluded that it is the responsibility of librarians to protect the copyright of authors. They have to discourage library users from infringing on copyright laws. The paper offers some suggestions that will reduce the infringement on copyright to the barest minimum.Item Evaluation of References in Dissertations and Theses against the Holdings in a University Library(2010-02) Omoba, F.A.; Fabunmi, B.A.The evaluation of university library collections must include quantitative as well as qualitative measures. This research seeks to demonstrate a relationship between quantitative and qualitative evaluation of Kenneth Dike Library collection in the sciences. It is hypothesized that, as a result of this relationship, the larger the collection, the more likely it is that it can support PhD research in the sciences.Item Cataloguing in an automated library: policy options for libraries in developing countries(2011) Fabunmi, B.A.The tremendous growth of information and its utilization has led to the emergence and use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in libraries. The use of ICT is obvious in the information handling process. The introduction of automation in cataloguing has opened up a new era of information processing in libraries. While many libraries in developed countries have embraced automated cataloguing, only few libraries embraced this technology in developing countries. The art of cataloguing is in a state of constant dynamic change due to advancement in ICT. The capabilities of automation are causing changes in the tools used by cataloguers. Catalogues are being computerised all over the world to facilitate better access points and multidimensional searches in the library holdings. As result of these, this article gives an exploration of cataloguing in the library before the advent of automation as well as cataloguing in an automated age. It also attempts to discuss cataloguers’ roles in an automated library and also the prospects of cataloguing in an automated library. There are many policy implications which should be given due considerations as the library materials are being processed electronically. The paper therefore suggests that the library management needs to be pro-active rather than reactive, ensure relevant training and re-training of cataloguers on the use of these modern tools in cataloguing by sending cataloguing staff to attend conferences, seminars and workshops in order to update their knowledge and maintain awareness of current trends in cataloguing, maintenance of the infrastructure, patrons education, among others.Item Student-Based Societies and the Development of Library and Information Profession in Nigeria(Library Philosophy and Practice, 2012-07-01) Bamgbose, O.J.The roles of Library Schools in the contemporary world transcend being ivory towers where Library and Information Professionals are trained. Besides, Library schools provide platform for students to develop their leadership potentials and abilities through participation in student-centred programmes. This paper chronicles the activities of one of such societies – the Library, Archival and Information Studies Students’ Association (LARISSA) in the University of Ibadan, Nigeria from the perspective of its activities in relation to the development of Library and Information Practice (LIP) in Nigeria. The study shows that a number of the LARISSA activities have direct positive impact on LIP particularly, in the areas of training and provision of teaching and training resources to the library school. There are however certain obstacles confronting the activities of the society. While the revenue base of LARISSA could be strengthened, it is recommended also that the society becomes consistent in its programme. There is also a need to network with other library schools, thereby sharing strengths amongst these schools.Item A Study of Social Network Addiction among Youths in Nigeria(Cenresin Publications, 2012-09-01) Ajewole, Olaniyi Olowu; Fasola, O.S.For most people, social networking sites are harmless platforms that allow for social interaction and personal expression. For others, social media has become more than an entertaining form of engagement; it has become an increasing compulsion. The purpose of this paper is to examine whether youths are becoming addicted to social networking sites to keep up interpersonal relationship. The survey research method was used with standardized questions drawn up. Eight higher institutions in Oyo state were used and the sample population drawn from them. Data gathered was analyzed using frequency count and simple percentages. It was gathered that majority of the respondents showed a tendency towards addiction to social network sites and so could not do without going through their online profiles daily. Recommendations were then made that more time should be spent on face to face interaction rather than on online communication, other social interests outside the internet that would sustain close interpersonal relationships should also be built upon.Item Geo-political zoning and workers’ earnings in Nigeria(2013) Fabunmi, B.A.The study sought to investigate disparities in earnings across the geo- political zone. Data were collected using the 2005 Labour Market Survey of the National Manpower Board covering 19,888 Nigerian workers: 2,297 in the North-East; 2,967 in the North-West; 3,714 in the North-Central; 3,448 in the South-East; 3,088 in the South-South; and 4,374 in the South-West. Sectors of employment were grouped into private and public across the six national geo-political zones. The research question raised was answered using descriptive statistics, while the null hypothesis formulated was tested using One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Scheffe Post hoc analyses were used to test for differences among the different geo-political zones. The sole hypothesis was tested at the 0.05 level of significance. The results indicated that there is a big difference between private sector and public sector mean in all the geo-political zones. This implies that public sector pays higher than private sector in all the six geo-political zones. Also the hypothesis tested showed a significant difference in workers’ earnings across the geo-political zones (R=0.03, F (5, 19,882) =4.693, p< 0.05). These accounted for 3.4% of the variance in workers’ earnings. The study established that workers’ earnings differed across the six geo-political zones in Nigeria; and also provided evidence of disparity in earnings. This important finding gives the anecdotal evidence and general perception of such disparities. It also gave us insight into the differences in earnings on account of geo-political zones which are being referred to as the native abilities of workers, thus providing evidence of variation in earnings in the six geo-political zones in Nigeria. Hence, the advocacy for policy and programmes for closing the disparity gaps.Item The Role of Information and Communication Technology in Development of University Education in Nigeria(2013) Fabunmi, B.A.Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) play vital roles in the development of university education in Nigeria. They aid in the storage, retrieval, display, and dissemination of information. This study examined the importance of ICTs in achieving the mission and vision of university education in Nigeria. This was informed by the fact that ICT has become an invaluable tool for the enhancement of teaching, learning, and research; and also community service. ICT facilities are now becoming indispensable tools for development with positive effects of ICT noted in commerce and industry, education, politics and government, culture, and other aspects of human life. The use of the ICTs may make or mar the goals and objectives of university education. This paper reviews the concept of information technologies, its application to education, the prospects and the challenges facing utilization of ICTs in the universities. Most lecturers and other stakeholders are not able to use ICTs. The researchers therefore suggested that seminars and workshops should be organized to educate lecturers and stakeholders in the education industry to acquire the technical skills required to be able to apply ICTs to teaching, learning and research, and its essence in the development of university education.Item An investigation into the role of libraries in higher education in Africa(2013) Fabunmi, B.A.Libraries have been the companions of higher education for many centuries. Library in higher education is supposed to play a critical role in the teaching, research, and learning activities through selection, acquisition, organization, preservation, and given access to all sorts of relevant and current materials which include books and periodicals, manuscripts, rare documents, journals, maps, etc. needed by teachers and students. This paper therefore made an attempt to examine the state of higher education libraries and how they have been able to support the institutions to which they are attached. The academic library is a vital force at the heart of higher education. Yet, its future seems to be uncertain, hence the need to bring into limelight the challenges facing academic library in Africa and offer possible strategies for responding to them. It was discovered that higher education libraries in Africa have not been providing the expected services effectively and efficiently due to the severe economic challenges facing them such as inability to stock libraries with current and relevant information resources, under staffing among others. The study recommended that higher education library should be well funded in order to employ enough staff, acquire materials such as current journals, books, equipment, integrate the use of Information and Communication Technology to carry out their housekeeping operations and services in order to be more effective and efficient in the information delivery, global access to information, and also to easy retrieval of information.Item Workers’ levels of education and private returns to investment in education in Nigeria(2013)The study investigated private returns to investment in education by workers’ level of education in Nigeria, using the descriptive survey research design. Data were collected using the 2005 Labour Market Survey of the National Manpower Board covering 18,793 Nigerian workers: 5,937 with no formal education; 4,910 with primary school certificate; 4,873 with secondary school certificate; and 3,073 with first degree. Level of education was grouped into three levels of education which are primary school, secondary school, and university. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), using the 0.05 level of significance for decision making. Scheffe Post hoc analysis was used to test for differences among the levels of education. Earning equations explained 82.9% of the variations in log earnings for all workers, implying that the higher the level of education of workers within the same sector, the higher the earnings. The differences between level of education account for 3.4% of the variation in private returns. On the basis of findings of this study, it is recommended that earnings of workers in Nigeria should be increased in order to make investment in education an attractive option. Also, policy makers should also formulate policies and craft incentives that will promote investment in education.Item Information Seeking Behaviour of Students of Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, Nigeria(2013-07-01) Fasola, O.S.; Olabode, S.O.The diversity in people account for how they seek information and this is what has prompted this study. This paper investigated the Information-Seeking behaviour of students of Ajayi Crowther University, a private university in South Western Nigeria. The survey research method was used and questionnaire administered to five hundred (500) students randomly selected from the three (3) faculties in the university. The data gathered from the questionnaire was analysed using the frequency count and simple percentage. It was discovered that majority of the students (66%) sought information for academic purposes and the library (62.8%) was their preferred place of searching and using information resources. Also, that their course of study (47.6) influenced the format (55.4%) they want information in. Majority of the respondents (53.2%) also expressed satisfaction with the library for being able to meet their information needs. Recommendations were then made that the library should increase and improve its stock to meet the demands of the students, provide working internet connectivity to enhance ease of electronic search and databases and train its staff in interpersonal relations to improve staff- user relations. And lastly, that periodic user education should be carried out in the library to educate users on effective and efficient use of the library to get maximum satisfaction.Item Information Needs of People Living with HIV/AIDS in Ibadan Metropolis(Journal of Education and Practice, 2014-01-01) Bamgbose, O.J.; Oyesola, O.O.It is no longer news that the horrific grip of HIV/AIDS has claimed more lives than those killed in world wars one and two. In Nigeria, a developing economy with high prevalence of HIV/AIDS, cases of HIV/AIDS have been reported in all the 36 states of the federation including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. This research sought out to enumerate the varying information needs of these special people positively living with HIV.In other to achieve this objective, fifty Persons Living With HIV/AIDS ( PLWHA) responded to the questionnaire designed to reveal their information needs across nine different local government areas in Ibadan, Nigeria with the view to know their information sources and the barriers inhibiting access to HIV/AIDS information. However, the findings revealed that relevant information which should meet the varying needs of PLWHA are not available due to poverty, non involvement of the positive people at HIV/AIDS- related programmes, including the selection of HIV/AIDS information, stigmatization and discrimination often faced by PLWHA . While 62% of the respondents consulted the media, 62% turned to Churches and Mosques where the clergies were scarcely trained in HIV/AIDS related activities. Other sources of information were hardly consulted. It is recommended that religious leaders can be a very good channel in reaching out to PLWHA if trained as peer educators. PLWHA should be included in the various selection committees not to only provide relevant information, but also to give sense of belonging in meeting their psychological needs. NGOs on HIV/AIDS-information dissemination should be encouraged as well.Item The information needs and information seeking behaviour among the students of Ondo State university of science and technology, Okitipupa(International Journal of Digital Library Services, 2014-03-01) Oyadeyi, Adekunle EmmanuelThe study investigated the information needs and information seeking behaviour among the students of Ondo State University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa, Nigeria. However, questionnaire was used to gather relevant data while percentage count and frequencies were used for the presentation and analysis of data. The findings revealed that course work and assignment, examination and Text, General reading, Seminars and Workshops were factors that influence students’ information seeking behavior. The findings further revealed that Internet, Lecture Notes, Test Books, and Handout were the preferred and most used information sources. While complexity and lack of basic understanding of academic database were the major problems associated with the students’ information seeking process in the library. Hence, the study concluded that it would be appropriate for the undergraduate students to take advantage of the services provided by the library to enhance their information seeking behavior in this ever dynamic information technology driven era and recommended that the library should organize user education/workshop at the beginning of every semester or session for all categories of students.Item ICT Use, Cognitive Style and Job Motivation as Determinants of Workers' Creativity in Newspaper Industries(American Research Institute for Policy Development, 2014-03-01) Oso, O.O.; Ifijeh, G.Workers’ creativity has become a subject of both theoretical and empirical discourse in recent times. This study investigated creativity among workers in Newspaper houses. The study sought to find out the effects of ICT use, cognitive styles and motivation on workers creativity. A total of 699 workers in newspaper houses in Nigeria were chosen as the study population. Data was gathered using questionnaire as the instrument. 400 questionnaires were administered and 393 were returned and used for the study. The study found out that the use of ICTs (referring generally to computers, videos, hardware, software, and networks) positively influences workers creativity in the newspaper industries. It also revealed that ‘learning new ways to think’ as a cognitive style was ranked highest in influencing workers creativity (Mean=4.20). The study further revealed that the current use of incentive motivation influences workers job performance in relation to their levels of creativity in media houses. The result of the joint effect of independent variables (ICT Use, Cotgnitive Styles and Motivation) on creativity was significant (F(3,389) = 94.588; R = .649, R2 = .422, Adj. R2 = .417; P < .05). About 42% of the variation was accounted for by the independent variables. The study therefore recommends adequate motivation, provision of ICT facilities and encouragement of good cognitive styles as ways through which workers creativity could be improved.Item Blogging: An Emerging Initiative amongst Librarians in Oyo State Nigeria(Impact Factor, 2015-04-01) Fasola, O.S.; OSO, O.O.; ALONGE, A.J.This paper examines blogging as an emerging initiative among librarians in Nigeria. Hitherto, public information were shrouded in official secrecy and impenetrable bureaucratic difficulties that denied access to public records. Besides the Model Law on Access to Information in Africa, one quarter of countries in Africa have enacted the law to guarantee easy access to public information not in the prohibition list. This study employed the use of content analysis of the African Model Law, various national laws as well as various judicial authorities on the provisions of the law on freedom of access to government information. The study revealed unprecedented opportunity of access to public information including legal information and legislative data. Also, despite a handful of judicial decisions validating the obligation on the part of the government to make disclosure in this regard, regrettably, the law has not been fully utilized by Africans. This study further underscored the role of the library in the post 2015 SDG era to transcend mere provision of information to its information seekers. Rather, the library’s mandates include, empowering its patrons to be able to access public information including legislative data even beyond the walls of the library. Libraries could therefore organise outreaches, exhibition and public awareness activities. Interpretation and repackaging of the law in easy to read expression will also be essential. Mobile Apps and other IT compliant models in line with the Lyon declaration can all be championed by librarians while the library itself as a corporate organisation can seek information request which would be useful for its clients.Item Library Collection as Correlate of Library Use:(Library Philosophy and Practice, 2015-08-01) Fasola, O.S.This paper examines how the collection of a school library can influence students’ use of the library in secondary schools in Oyo state. The survey research method was used with 1200 questionnaires distributed to secondary school pupils in Oyo state. Data collected was analyzed using simple percentage and frequency count. It was discovered that many of the public schools in Oyo state have almost non-functioning libraries. Some had materials not relevant to secondary school pupils, while there was also the issue of non-professionals manning the libraries. It was also that many of the school libraries shared space with either a classroom or a laboratory. Majority of the respondents said that they did not use their school libraries as the libraries do not meet their academic needs. Recommendations were then made that government should make policies enforcing relevant collection development in secondary schools and provision of adequate space to house the libraries, to dissuade administrators from diverting money meant for the library to other activities and employing qualified librarians or teacher librarians to man school librariesItem Perceptions and acceptance of librarians towards using Facebook and Twitter to promote library services in Oyo State, Nigeria(Emerald Insight, 2015-10-01) Fasola, O.S.Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to report on research that examined librarians’ perception and acceptance of use of Facebook and Twitter in promoting library services in Oyo state, Nigeria. Design/methodology/approach – The survey design and interview were used to collect data from librarians in Oyo state. The questionnaire contained questions that are pertinent to the issues being investigated. The 81 responses (81 per cent) received were processed, analysed and results presented.
